Before Buffet Signs - A Buffet History Lesson
Food historians tell us that in the past a buffet had little to do with food.
The affluent French would set up special shelves on one side of the dining hall to exhibit showpiece silverware.
Later, food became part of the exhibit, giving guests a peek at dinner. Even in medieval times, guests looked for buffet signs to tell them what sort of culinary treats they were in store for.
The Buffet Gets Its American Start
Did you know that the same man credited for bringing the Beatles to America was also the one to introduce Americans to the first all-you-can-eat buffet?
Herb McDonald was a publicist in Las Vegas. One night, while working late, Herb went to the hotel kitchen and brought out some cheese and cold cuts to make a sandwich. When keen gamblers walked by, he got the idea for the first “midnight” buffet. Signs in those days (1946), advertised the cost for the late night meals at $1.25.
Today, all-you-can-eat aficionados (and hungry gamblers) will find Imprint Plus reusable and magnetic buffet signs in dozens of Las Vegas hotel casinos and hotels. We’ve created custom, reusable name badges and personalized buffet signage for places like the Marriott, Choice Hotels, Best Western Hotels, Hyatt Hotels and Sheraton Hotels.
